Dear 8th Grade Parent(s) or Guardian(s),
For the next five weeks, we will be learning about the Holocaust. While we do love history and could talk for days on end about this important topic, the focus of the project will be centered on reading for information, analyzing historical fiction, and expository writing. There will also be time for students to get creative with an extra project of their choosing.
This week, students will begin the novel, Devil's Arithmetic. They will also be taking notes and reading informational texts about The Holocaust.
In upcoming weeks, students will get into groups and choose a relevant topic to do their projects on. They will be given all or portions of six class periods to complete a short research paper and accompanying project(s). Most, if not all, of this project should be finished at school. Projects will be completed on trifold boards that are available in the library. The cost of these boards is $6.00. Boards will be on sale soon!
Through the use of videos, lecture, research, and historical fiction, it is my hope that our students develop a deep understanding of The Holocaust.
Our Unit will culminate with a visit from Holocaust Survivor, Martin Lowenberg. Mr. Lowenberg has been to our district in past years and he will return on May 13, at which point our students will have the opportunity to hear his story. The public is invited to view students’ projects and listen to Mr. Lowenberg speak. The event is scheduled to run from 7:30 am – 9:30 am.
Please note that some of the content from Mr. Lowenberg’s presentation may not be suitable for young children.
If you have any questions, please email or call me at your convenience.
Sincerely,
Jon Lorenzoni
